ALERT!! American Foul Brood in Broome and Tioga Counties! Posted July 13, 2020.
The following is from Joan Mahoney, Interim State Apiculturist.
I am writing to inform you that through a beekeeper report and follow up inspection in Broome and Tioga Counties, we have found a substantial infection of American Foul Brood ( over 50 colonies). We confirmed the AFB by using an AFB test kit and visual inspection by an experienced inspector. We will be sending the samples to the Beltsville Bee Lab for verification and antibiotic resistance testing. We began the abatement of some of the colonies and will take care of the rest in the next few days. Our inspectors will be conducting perimeter inspections at neighboring beekeeper’s yards. We are asking your assistance to help notify beekeepers who may have yards in Broome and Tioga Counties that AFB has been found and to share with them the signs and the symptoms of the disease. I have attached two links that may be helpful to your club members. Please feel free to contact me at 518-457-2087 with questions. Thank you.
